Optus has acquired an additional 59,000 cellphone customers in the quarter to 30 September taking its total mobile customer base to 6.08 million.

The number was released by parent SingTel as part of an update of its regional cellular numbers. As at 30 September 2005, SingTel and its associates had 74.05 million customers. This, according to SingTel, is the largest mobile customer base in Asia outside of China and represents a growth of 31 percent from 56 million a year ago.

On a proportionate basis, SingTel's subscriber base in the seven markets - Australia, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand - increased 30 percent from a year ago to about 29 million. On a year-on-year basis, SingTel's four Asian mobile associates - Advanced Info Service, Bharti, Globe and Telkomsel - posted strong subscriber growth, ranging from 6 to 72 percent.

More details of the market and financial performance of the seven mobile operations, and of Optus' overall performance, will be available when SingTel announces its results for the quarter and half year ended 30 September 2005 on 10 November.
