Fujitsu Australia to host regional support centre

IT Industry - Deals

Fujitsu Australia has beat around a dozen other regional Fujitsu subsidiaries in an internal bidding contest for the right to host a new product integration support centre.

The centre is now under construction in North Ryde and is expected to open in January with a staff of around 15. It will be one of only three such centres worldwide, the others are in Germany and the USA. It will provide application support to Fujitsu subsidiaries and their customers throughout the region.

Fujitsu's president of its Asia Pacific business, Dr Kyung-Soo Ahn, said competition to host the centre had been very intense.

Rod Vawdry, managing director of Fujitsu Australia, said the availability in Australia of people with both the technical skills and the language skills needed for the region had been key factors in Australia's successful bid. He also thanked the NSW Government Department of Regional Development and Invest Australia for their support in the Australian subsidiary's bid for the centre.

The occasion was marked with a traditional Japanese sake ceremony which also celebrated the official naming of Fujitsu's new Australia and New Zealand headquarters at 15 Blue Street in North Sydney. It is now named the Fujitsu Centre and is topped with a large Fujitsu neon sign, first switched on about three weeks ago.

The centre was formally the headquarters of the Australian operations of Atos Origin, a European IT services company. Fujistu bought the Australian operation in October 2004.
