GSA president, Alan Hadden, said: "We have been reporting on HSDPA device developments since May 2005, at which time just 12 products were announced. 183 new devices have been launched so far in 2007. The milestone we announce today of 100 devices operating in the 850MHz band [that in which Next G operates] is an important catalyst for extending HSPA to all markets across the Americas."

The survey identified a range of devices comprising: 137 mobile phones; 64 PC datacards (PC cards and embedded modules); 51 notebooks; 32 wireless routers; 23 USB modems; three personal media players with HSDPA-connectivity; and one camera with HSDPA-connectivity

Sixty three of these support, or can be upgraded to, a high-speed downlink capability of 3.6Mbps peak and 42 devices support, or can be upgraded to, a high-speed downlink capability of 7.2 Mbps peak. At least 24 devices support, or can be upgraded for, HSUPA (high speed uplink packet access), initially delivering 2.1Mbps (peak) for the uplink direction. HSUPA has commercially launched on mobile networks in Asia and Europe so far this year.

GSA's latest "HSDPA Operator Commitments" survey   identified 66 operators who had commercially launched or are deploying 3.6Mbps (peak) data capability in their networks as the first phase of a planned evolution to 14.4Mbps (peak). Some networks now offer 7.2 Mbps (peak) commercial service.
