Telstra buys $4.2m of Beam's Iridium satellite gear

IT Industry - Deals

Tele-IP's (ASX: TEE) wholly-owned subsidiary, Beam Communications has received a $4.2million order from Telstra for its fixed site terminals, in-vehicle satellite telephones and accessories for use on the Iridium satellite system.

The bulk of the order is for the Beam Remote Satellite Terminal that emulates a standard voice based telephone service over the Iridium satellite network. Michael Capocchi, general manager of Beam said the order "reflects on the commitment Beam has made over the last four years in supporting Telstra's mobile satellite requirements...The strategic direction Telstra is taking to further enhance its mobile satellite services for both internal use and customer applications, provides a solid foundation for Beam to continue to develop this business."

The Beam subsidiary was established in late 2002 and has made a substantial investment in the development and manufacturing of remote satellite communications solutions for the global telecommunications market. It became the first company to design and manufacture a fully compliant POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) emulation system for the Iridium Satellite network and now clams to be one of the leading global manufacturers of Iridium-based satellite communications equipment.
