NEC brings U-Japan concept to Greater Springfield, Qld

IT Industry - Deals

NEC Australia has signed a deal with the Springfield Land Corporation to provide communications facilities to residents of the new development of Greater Springfield in Queensland'

NEC Australia managing director, Toshiharu Iwasa said "This is one of the most important projects we're pursuing in Australia; providing integrated end-to-end communication solutions to Australia's growing communities is a key focus for NEC and we're delighted to be working with Greater Springfield on this amazing development."
The Springfield model will be loosely based on Japan's U-Japan initiative,  a program designed to provide ubiquitous communications solutions to residents "anytime, anywhere, by anything and anyone."

NEC says it will provide easy-to-use technology solutions to all residents in the Springfield community. Springfield residents will have access to a range of bundled service including Internet, IPTV and multi-media. They will also have access to  in-home WiFi and WiFi hotspots around the Springfield community enabling them to use the same connection at home and anywhere in the precinct.

NEC will also assessing Greater Springfield's ICT infrastructure requirements "to meet the demands of a changing work/life environment" and says it intends "to use Springfield as an environment in which to showcase new technology and innovations."

NEC will house infrastructure to support the services in Springfield's Polaris data centre and will interconnect with the network of several telcos "to ensure residents are still able to choose their own internet and telephone services."

Springfield's Polaris data centre  is being build by physical IT infrastructure provider, American Power Conversion (APC) in alliance with Springfield Land Corporation. It will be the first Tier III+ data centre in Queensland and APC will provide network-critical physical infrastructure technology.

The centre will be located in the CBD of Greater Springfield and will be linked to Brisbane by a privately funded dark-fibre installed by Pipe Networks.

NEC will also be involved in the Springfield Health Precinct, still in the planning stages. NEC and SLC have previously worked together on Springfield's bid to the Federal Government for E-health initiative funding.

Springfield Land Corporation is the master-planner of the $15 billion plus 2860 hectare Greater Springfield project. Acquired in 1992, Greater Springfield encompasses four suburbs and a CBD area.
