has often been touted as the technology of the future. However, in Australia, where the vast majority of businesses fall into the small to medium range, the Cloud is the technology of right now.

The last thing SMEs need to worry about is capital expenditure on infrastructure for hardware and software, as well as the considerable cost of maintaining software compliance. The burgeoning market for Cloud Services has finally come into its own, with Australia leading the way in adoption.

The Australian Government Information Office (AGIMO) has published a multi-user list of 35 suppliers selected to provide cloud and cloud-Like services that includes virtual desktops and servers, disaster recovery and managed backups, etendering packages and online collaboration tools.

Contracts under the arrangement are limited to $80,000 including GST and to a maximum term of 12 months. Between them the 35 suppliers  have been approved to offer more than 900 services.

The list will be valid for two years and will be continuously updated to reflect changes in the suppliers, services and pricing available to Agencies. Use of the list is optional for federal government agencies and it is also available to state and territory governments.

According to the Government the multiuser list - which has been established under the Australian Government Data Centre Strategy 2010-2025 -  is more flexible than a panel and offers a broad range of services.

"Many agencies have a need for low risk, flexible solutions that enable them to address short-term requirements," it said. "Using these services will provide agencies with valuable experience with security, legal, management, compliance and auditing issues."

The three basic types of cloud services will be available through the MUL: Software as a Service (SaaS); Platform as a Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) under the four basic cloud services delivery models: private or internal cloud; community cloud; public cloud and hybrid cloud.
