A slim majority of Australian mainframe users prefer to update their in-house applications to gain new features rather than replacing them with commercial packages.

It's a convenient result for survey sponsor Micro Focus, but according to new research 51% of Australian businesses prefer to further develop mainframe applications to gain new functionality, compared with 31% that favour replacement with an off-the-shelf package.

The survey also found that 94% of Australian companies have a structured review process and strategy for their applications portfolio (compared with 87% globally), and on average they review priorities for that portfolio every five months.

The applications most commonly on Australian lists for modernisation are HR, ERP, BPM, CRM, finance/accounting, and project portfolio management. Remarkably, 55% of Australian respondents were planning to modernise ERP systems during the next three months. CRM is another high priority area.

Part of the modernisation process is providing mobile access to mainframe applications. 23% of respondents said they had already done this for at least one application, with 34% planning to do so within three to six months.

The survey was conducted by Vanson Bourne in April 2012 and covered 590 IT decision makers in nine countries, including 36 in Australia. All worked for mainframe-using organisations with more than 500 employees, and the sample covered multiple industry sectors.
