Development partnership promises fast, low-power SSDs for data centres

Another two companies have teamed to deliver SSD advances.
There's plenty of activity in SSD development at the mopment. Hot on the heels of the announcement of a joint development pact between Seagate and DensBits, Mosaid and Movachips have revealed they are working together on a HyperLink NAND flash controller for SSDs.

A single controller will allow the manufacture of SSDs up to 8TB capacity. The devices will be optimised for data centre applications.

Other features of the controller will include a dual-core processor, 6Gbps SATA interface, full disk encryption, enhanced randomisation of data reliability, and smart power management.

"HLNAND is pioneering a new market for SSDs by overcoming the limitations of HDDs (hard disk drives) in lifespan, power consumption and capacity," said Daniel Kim, CEO of Novachips.

Jin-Ki Kim, vice president of R&D at Mosaid said "With the SSD market rapidly gaining momentum, joint development projects between flash device and controller vendors are critical for quickly bringing advanced products to market. Novachips is an ideal partner for us because of their expertise in hardware and software controller development."

The new controller is scheduled for availability in mid 2013.
