There are now more free Android apps than iPhone apps

A significant milestone was passed last month in the battle for the hearts and minds of smartphone users: the number of free Android apps surpassed the number of free Apple iPhone apps.

According to Dutch company Distimo - which monitors the app store marketplace, in April "The Google Android Market eclipsed the Apple App Store for iPhone in terms of free applications and now has 134,342 free applications, while the Apple App Store iPhone has 121,845 free applications." However paid Android apps amount to only one third of paid iPhone apps, according to Distimo.

Distimo said: "If all application stores maintain their current growth pace, approximately five months from now Google Android Market will be the largest store in terms of number of applications followed by the Apple App Store for iPhone and iPad."

However perhaps the most surprising statistic in the latest Distimo report is the rapid growth of the Microsoft Windows Phone 7 marketplace. Distimo forecast that, in five months time, Windows Phone 7 would be in third place in terms of the number of apps available, followed by BlackBerry App World and Nokia Ovi Store. "At its current growth rate, the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace will be larger than the Nokia Ovi Store and BlackBerry App World before the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace has even been available for a full year."

At the end of March, Distimo put the number of iPad apps available in the US at 75,755, iPhone apps at 333,214, Android at 206,143, BlackBerry at 26,771, Ovi at 29,920 and Windows Phone 7 at 11,731.
