Vodafone consolidates global data management

Vodafone has chosen the Dublin-based data centre of its Irish cellular operator as the third of three data centres that will service Vodafone Group's worldwide data storage and systems needs.

According to Vodafone Ireland, the decision will result in a net investment of more than EUR 8 million between 2006 and 2007 by Vodafone Group in Ireland and will secure a total of 50 jobs in Ireland.

Vodafone says that, in December 2004, it launched its plans to consolidate worldwide data management facilities into three locations to service the needs of the entire global Vodafone Group. (However as far as ITWire can determine no public announcement of this plan was ever made.) The Dublin data centre joins facilities already appointed to this role in Italy and Germany.

Teresa Elder, Vodafone Ireland's CEO, said: "This move will truly allow us, as a global company, to leverage our size in order to build increased efficiencies and greater speed to market. Consolidating services into three locations will enable us to operate on the principle of 'build once and deploy many times'. This will lead to an even better customer experience and we will be in a position to develop and apply leading technologies and best practice across the entire global organisation."

ITWire was unable to obtain any comment from Vodafone Australia at press time as to whether the decision would have result in any reduction on staff levels at Vodafone Australia.
