Wii want to know: is GameCube gone or not? E-mail

After confirming to GameDaily that the GameCube was a goner, Nintendo is now telling Eurogamer that no, GameCube production continues apace. What the?

In what could be a classic case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing, Nintendo of American VP of Marketing and Corporate Affairs Perrin Kaplan has told GameDaily in answer to a question on GameCube production: “Are wii producing any more GameCubes? No.”

Of course, the actual quote of Ms Kaplan’s answer started with “Are we producing...”, but silly ol’ me just couldn’t resist.

Anyway, as final an answer as that would seem to be from a Nintendo of America VP no less, which we reported earlier in our article "Nintendo to Wii everywhere as GameCube gone for good", the latest news is that Nintendo UK seems to think the answer is completely the opposite.

Now we know that the peoples of the US and the UK don’t always see eye to eye on things, but this is getting wii-diculous.

Because today, a spokesperson for Nintendo UK has told Eurogamer that: "I can confirm that globally, Nintendo is still continuing production of GameCube hardware and GameCube software."

So the big question that Mr GameCube himself must be sweating over is which Nintendo person has it right. Unfortunately, at the time we went to press, Nintendo were unavailable for comment, but as soon as we have a clear answer, wii’ll be letting you know.

All of that said, doesn’t it remind you of the time that Ms Kaplan said that the Nintendo Wii would be region free? As wii all know, that little tidbit of information turned out to be completely wrong.

But the chances are that even if Ms Kaplan is wrong right at this moment in time, the GameCube’s shelf life is fast running out, with full GameCube compatibility built into the Wii anyway.

More news as wii get it.
