MySpace keeps an eye on copyright videos E-mail

MySpace - the social networking site that still hasn't fallen out of fashion - is preparing to block copyright-infringing videos, just as it already does with audio uploads.

The technology is basically the same, but this time using Audible Magic's database of 'fingerprints' rather GraceNote's.

Audible Magic's technology derives these fingerprints from perceptual characteristics of the content and is therefore unaffected by compression or transcoding. Over five million works have already been fingerprinted.

"MySpace is dedicated to ensuring that content owners, whether large or small, can both promote and protect their content in our community," said MySpace co-founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe.

MySpace parent company News Corp also owns TV stations and film studios - including Fox, which will be one of the first media companies to participate in the video-blocking trial. Universal Media Group - currently suing MySpace for assisting in copyright infringement - is also taking part.

News Corp recently subpoenaed Google subsidiary YouTube in a successful attempt to identify the people responsible for uploading entire episodes of '24' before they were broadcast.{moscomment}
