Avaya goes for the low end of the SMB IP telephony market E-mail

Avaya has introduced new IP telephony hardware and software that it says wil enable it to address SMBs with as few as two employees, in contrast to its current SMB offerings which are aimed at the 301-100 employee market.

It is estimated that 80 percent of Australia's SMBs have fewer than 30 employees.

Avaya has introduced Release 4.0 of its SMB IP telephony software Avaya IP Office, a five year-old product installed in 90,000 businesses worldwide and in 4000 in Australian and New Zealand.

The new IP Office 500 Communications Server, aimed at businesses with 10-30 users starts at a price which Avaya says is 25 percent lower than the entry level price of its current hardware. Australian pricing has not been disclosed but in the US.

Release 4.0 comes in 'Standard' and 'Professional' versions. The Standard edition is designed for very small businesses and serves up to 32 users. The Professional edition enables firms to take advantage of enhanced mobility, multi-site networking or customer service intelligence and scales to support up to 270 users.

Avaya identifies key new features of Release 4.0 as being:
 - It acts as a SIP gateway enabling businesses to use, for example IP over DSL instead of standard telephone lines for their network access.
 - It introduces new remote diagnostic tools, enabling resellers to "quickly and proactively identify and resolve problems remotely."
- It adds new multi-site hot-desking capabilities so employees can log into any digital, analogue or IP phone at any of their company's networked locations and have their calls and voice messages follow them.
- It adds new multi-site hunt group capabilities so workers at any networked location can be part of the same call routing group.
