Fuel consumption can be cut by more than 2.5 per cent by adding a simple piece of software to a car's engine computer.

The software, designed by a Dutch researcher in conjunction with Ford, dynamically switches a car's dynamo on and off, reports Reuters.

The software is not specific to Ford and can be used in any car with an engine computer, according to its developer - University of Eindhoven scientist John Kessels.

The dynamo's role is to charge a car's battery while the engine is running. The fuel saving could be doubled if the car's engine was dynamically switched on and off, Kessels says, but this would require modifications to the engine.{moscomment}
