Skype for Mac gains video and SMS E-mail

After an extended beta period, Mac OS X users finally have a 'gold' release of Skype 2.5, the version of the popular P2P telephony application that includes video chat and SMS capability.

Skype 2.5 also allows high-quality 640x480 video calls thanks to a new codec, although there is no support for it in the GUI. Instead, the configuration file must be edited to enable this feature. 640x480 calling also requires both parties to have "a fairly high-end computer" (an iMac G5 is said to be adequate, along with any Intel-based model) and sufficient Internet bandwidth.

Other features include a birthday reminder and clickable mood messages, along with miscellaneous bug fixes.

Version 3.0 of Skype for Windows went gold last December and was most recently updated on January 24.{moscomment}
