That habit forming Massive Multiplayer Online Role Play Game World of Warcraft is chalking up some impressive sales figures with the release of the first expansion The Burning Crusade.

Blizzard Entertainment has released an impressive press announcement today claiming the world record for PC games sold in one day.  Claiming a total of 2.4 million copies sold world wide in 24 hours.

Release on Jan 16th (17th in Australia and New Zealand) it was a no-brainer that the expansion would sell well.  The phenomenally successful MMORPG has a slave base of around 8 million players.  A lot of these players are dedicated to the level grind that is the nature of most MMORPG’s.  As such there was a ravening hoard awaiting the release of further content for the game.

"The Burning Crusade has already exceeded even our most ambitious expectations," said Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We're pleased that so many players are eager to see all of the new content that the expansion has to offer, and we look forward to seeing everyone online as additional players continue to upgrade in the days ahead."

Having four million units available for release made finding a copy easier for budding level 70 characters, many of which will now be forgoing school, work, social gatherings and food to visit the polished content that The Burning Crusade provides.

As far as one-day sales records go for PC games well done Blizzard, but it was really always going to happen.  Timing is everything, the mind control that WOW has on its audience, coupled with the wait for new content was a masterstroke in delivery.  If the wait had of been longer, we would have seen fans drop off to a bevy of new and interesting MMORPG about to hit the market.

MMORPG fans can look to a rich field to choose from this year, with the big names of Middle Earth Online, Warhammer Online and Conan leading the pack.
