Gears of War actually has Japanese sell out. E-mail

Yes! It is a shooter, yet it is seemingly immensely popular even in the role-play fortress land of the rising sun.  Even worldwide sales of this Xbox 360 exclusive are stunning those in the games industry, whilst simultaneously bringing smiles to those at Redmond.

Here are some of the achievements of the fun Xbox 360 exclusive over the ten weeks it has been on sale.

Gears of War
(GOW) has just topped 3 Million in unit sales - almost one copy per three Xbox 360 machines.  These worldwide sales make it the fastest- selling game on the Xbox platform.

Nominations for the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences (AIAS) awards have just been announced.  GOW heads the list of nominations with ten, ahead of critically acclaimed (I can attest) fellow digital masterpieces The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion with eight, and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and Viva Pinata with six each.

Awards GOW stands to attain include Overall Game of the Year, Console Game of the Year, Outstanding Innovation in Gaming, Outstanding Achievement in Animation, Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction, Outstanding Character Performance - Male, Outstanding Achievement in Game Play Engineering, Outstanding Achievement in Online Game Play, Outstanding Achievement in Visual Engineering, and Action/Adventure Game of the Year.

While it still ranks a distant third behind Nintendo and Sony, recently the more "Japan Friendly" Blue Dragon boosted sales of the Xbox 360 in the worlds second largest game market.

This was nice for Microsoft, but today come reports of GOW, with its foul mouthed butch characters and gun heavy alien shootouts selling out in Japanese retailers.  This, from the country that normally goes goo-goo over giant robot games, or mini-skirted heroines in whimsical fantasy RPG's.

And despite GOW getting a CERO Z-rating (Normally reserved for video nasties, 18 YO +).

Of course no actual sales figures have emerged at this point, so a headline like "Gears of War sells out" could simply mean the retailers stocked slightly less than the expected demand entailed.
