Cornered!
Cornered! is a blog devoted, most of the time anyway, to telecommunications: local and global issues, technology, people and trends from the perspective of someone who's been reporting, analysing and commenting on the industry since the dark ages (BC - before competition). Sometimes serious, sometimes flippant, sometimes frivolous. Controversial, analytical, informative, amusing, but never boring; a vehicle for examinations of important issues and observations on my encounters and experiences in an industry where polarised views and hyperbole are the norm.

A US market researcher claims WiMAX will be plagued by security issues akin to those that afflicted WiFi. Unwired Australia says that lesson has been learnt and WiMAX is secure.

A couple of weeks ago ABI Research, a US based company, specialling in market research and intelligence of a range of telecoms technologies, issued a press release, which I reported in iTWire,  warning that "contrary to many users' expectations, WiMAX does have a number of security vulnerabilities."

"The WiMAX Forum has emphasised how much more secure WiMAX is than early WiFi. As a result, there may be WiMAX customers who are similarly lulled into a false sense of security. The flaws should begin to show themselves once the first big WiMAX rollouts occur," their VP, Stan Schatt, said.

ABI contended that few WiMAX equipment manufacturers, other than the industry giants such as Motorola, Nortel, and Alcatel, "have the internal expertise to fill all of these gaps. "This leaves the field open for a number of smaller specialised developers to create and supply solutions."

If you want to find out more on this important topic you need to buy ABI Research's report "WiMAX security issues,"  which is all of 10 pages. Don't ask me how much it costs, they don't make the prices of their reports public.
