Nokia’s N80 3G phone has offered inbuilt Wi-Fi along with regular 2G/3G features. Now they’ve teamed up with Australian VoIP company Engin to offer 10c untimed VoIP calls when in range of a connectable Wi-Fi network

Nokia and Australian VoIP provider, Engin, have announced what they call “a breakthrough for consumers seeking low cost mobile phone bills”, allowing Engin customers to make cheap Internet phone calls using the Nokia N80 Internet Edition, which is being called ‘the first Mobile Internet Phone to be released in Australia”.

The N80 Internet Edition differs to the previous N80 model only by some extra software loaded onto the phone, and an upgraded firmware version, with the hardware remaining the same. Included are a new download application, a VoIP program with SIP capability and some other web apps. Engin have also made ‘the Engin Mobile Wizard’ available for easy configuration of the Nokia N80 Internet Edition.

So, Nokia and Engin are taking advantage of the fact that the N80 can connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi, and can connect to Engin’s network through the included VoIP Internet phone call software with SIP. If you’re at home or in the office where you can set up a proper Wi-Fi network with appropriate security, you can reliably make VoIP calls through your N80 handset. It will also work when you’re out and about – if you can get a good Wi-Fi connection.

Nokia and Engin promise that “making Internet phone calls with the Nokia N80 Internet Edition is as easy as making a traditional phone call”, with Ilkka Tales, CEO of Engin saying that: “People are increasingly using Internet Telephony to dramatically reduce the cost of their home and business phone bills. Now we can offer them the same savings breakthrough on their mobile phone”.

Tales continues: “Already more than one in four people are regularly using their mobile devices to access the Internet, which shows that the mass market is recognising the value of convergent devices. With the Nokia N80 Internet Edition, you can seamlessly blend together surfing the web and making cost-efficient Internet calls”.

Wanting to promote the cost benefits that VoIP offers, Tales continues that: “With the proliferation of WiFi hot spots in the home, office and public areas, people can use the Nokia N80 to make calls, no matter where they are, over the Engin network at our low cost call rates. You can literally be in a public space, connected to a WiFi hotspot and make 10 cent untimed calls to landlines around Australia, and 20 cent untimed calls to 20 countries around the world.

David Watkins, Director, Multimedia Sales APAC, Nokia, said, "Convergence is bringing more opportunities for consumers and Nokia’s Nseries opens up the possibilities of the Internet going mobile.  Engin's VoIP Internet Phone service is a great example. As a multimedia computer, the N80 Internet Edition is a powerful pocket-sized device which makes it easy for consumers to choose the wireless connectivity that best suits their needs," Watkins said.

According to Nokia, the N80 Internet Edition brings together wireless LAN (WLAN), a robust browser, support for Internet calls, a 3-megapixel camera, and quadband GSM/WCDMA coverage and a host of other Internet services not previously installed together on Nokia devices. It’s full price is AUD $1049, although it should available to purchase on a plan at a lower upfront cost if you want that option, as with all other mobiles.

Engin offers home users average savings of up to 55 per cent on their monthly phone bills with low cost call rates for as little as 10 cents untimed, anytime locally and nationally, calls to mobiles from 20 cents per minute and international calls from 20 cents untimed, anytime to selected international destinations on Engin’s new World 20 Plan. Calls between Engin users are free of Engin charges.
