Cornered!
Cornered! is a blog devoted, most of the time anyway, to telecommunications: local and global issues, technology, people and trends from the perspective of someone who's been reporting, analysing and commenting on the industry since the dark ages (BC - before competition). Sometimes serious, sometimes flippant, sometimes frivolous. Controversial, analytical, informative, amusing, but never boring; a vehicle for examinations of important issues and observations on my encounters and experiences in an industry where polarised views and hyperbole are the norm.

"...it is the teachers who will have the final say. They will determine whether people will read for information, knowledge or, ultimately, wisdom. If they fail and their pupils read only for information, then we are in deep trouble. For the net doesn't educate and the mind must be primed to deal with its informational deluge. On that priming depends the future of civilisation. How we handle the digitising of the libraries will determine who we are to become."

Come off it, This might be true if the population were comprised largely of 'wisdom seeking' individuals who collectively advance knowledge and civilisation. This is not the case, and never has been. Not of academic wisdom at any rate. For generations primitive peoples without any written languages thrived and prospered through intimate knowledge, and wisdom of their natural environment. The wisdom that has advanced civilisation to what it is today has always been the province of select minority of gifted individuals who have pushed the boundaries of human knowledge and our ability to exploit the natural world.

That is not likely to change: and as the sum total of that knowledge and information expands exponentially it would become increasingly difficult for anyone at the cutting edge of any field of human endeavour to appraise themselves of the current status, let alone make progress, without all the tools that information technology provides.{moscomment}
