In what has been a long anticipated move, Microsoft will offer the consumer version of Vista and Office 2007 as online downloads as an alternative to buying boxed versions, according to an Associated Press report. Microsoft has held back from selling its software as online downloads but caused a few tongues to wag last year when it started charging a nominal $1.50 fee for downloads of Office 2007 Beta 2.Featured Whitepaper

Called the Windows Anytime Upgrade, the new option allows customers to upgrade their existing edition of Windows Vista to a higher-grade edition by way of an online transaction. To use Windows Anytime Upgrade, a customer will be able to click on a Windows Anytime Upgrade option in the Start menu, select the desired upgrade edition, purchase it online to secure a new digital key, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the upgrade. The commonly held view among market watchers is that most of Microsoft's Vista business will come by way of consumers buying new PCs. A major issue for Windows XP users will be whether their existing hardware is capable of running Vista. In many if not most cases, users will not have enough memory to run Vista with acceptable performance and the graphics capability to run the new Aero interface.
