ShoreTel, a US-based manufacturer of IP PBXes, has opened a subsidiary in Australia, headed up by Tony Warhurst, former MD of another US IP PBX hopeful, Zultys, which was placed into chapter 11 late in 2006 and sold to Pivot.

ShoreTel may be small but has big ambitions, saying that its products, which can scale up to 10,000 users, will be competing with market leaders Cisco and Avaya. However, no matter how well its products stack up technically the top end of town is unlikely to easily persuaded to commit to a small company in favour of more established major players, especially in the wake of Zultys' problems.  However the company is now operating under its new owner and, according to a letter posted by the new owner and CEO on its website, is now operating again in Australia.

ShoreTel has nominally been represented here since April 2006 when it announced New Zealand based Connector Systems as a distributor for Australia and New Zealand. It claimed at the time that this appointment underscored its "commitment to the distribution channel model abroad as well as at home," saying: "Channel partners have played a crucial role in ShoreTel's success."

"ShoreTel has experienced strong interest from Downunder, so we know Connector Systems will be critical in driving reseller business through those regions," said John W Combs, president and CEO of ShoreTel. "This agreement immediately benefits our mutual customers by combining two powerful tools-Connector Systems' proven distribution reach and ShoreTel's capability in delivering cast-iron reliability into VoIP networks."

ShoreTel Australia declined to comment on Connectors' role in advance of its formal launch scheduled for23 January. However iTWire's investigations into Connector were not re-assuring.
