Xbox360 number 1 in US: PS3 floundering? E-mail

Here is what my electronic crystal ball tells me about this year in home entertainment.

The Xbox 360 will continue to sell well.  The HD-DVD add-on, a great series of software, support and fantastic Live experience will continue to provide Microsoft with a solid base of fans.  Providing Xbox Live does not get too pricey.  I doubt we will see a second generation Xbox 360 this year, but we may see an increase in HD capacity to allow the proper use of the new TV download service.  We may also see a price reduction, but not if the Xbox 360 continues to sell well.  Microsoft's strategy in this area seems to be around providing bundles of increasing value to consumers.

The Nintendo Wii will continue to burn brightly for months to come.  There is a certain Novelty factor that is adding more Nintendo fan club members daily.  Some US retailers reporting "enquiries" for the Wii, outstripping PS3 by 37 to one.

But there will be a drop off.  How big will be determined by Nintendo to some degree.  Continuing to provide new Wii Channels that have compelling content.  Keeping the flow of Virtual Console games at a consistent rate and of course providing new games that make good use of the Wii-mote will be paramount.

A firmware upgrade to allow DVD playback in non-Japanese parts of the world will also be a plus.  This will stem the slide of players into post faddism.  I just made that up, but you know what I mean.  More and more households will be installing HD TV's and begin looking towards technology to take advantage of their new toys.  As such, if the Wii losses the fun/fad factor, it may get relegated behind a PS3 or Xbox 360.

Finally the Sony flag ship, the PlayStation 3.  My prediction is that despite the doom predictions permeating the digital space, it will be a solid performer, consistently through the year.  A killer must have game will be needed sooner than later however.

It may well be third in the sales race of Next-Gen consoles, as it is on a worldwide scale now (though it is yet to be launched in Europe or Australia).  It may well continue to gather a small layer of dust in electronic shops, but the long-term outlook of the PS3 is assured.  Like its predecessor, there will be new PS3's being bought far into the Next-Next-Generation game console war yet to come.
