Amiga OS 4.0 "The Final Update" released E-mail
by Adam Turner
Wednesday, 27 December 2006
Five years in the making, Amiga OS 4.0 "The Final Update" has finally been released for registered AmigaOne customers.

Currently the operating system only runs on AmigaOne computers, which are no longer sold, but the availability of Amiga OS-compatible PowerPC hardware will be announced by third parties in early 2007.

Developed by Belgian-German software house Hyperion Entertainment, under license from Amiga Inc, Amiga OS 4.0 is available as an ISO disc image containing a full installation of all Amiga OS 4.0 components.

Since November of 2001, Hyperion Entertainment has been working on Amiga OS 4.0 for PowerPC powered devices, the latest incarnation of the multimedia-focused, small footprint operating system launched by Commodore Business Machines in 1985.

The status of Amiga OS has been in flux since Commodore Business Machines filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 1994, with the Amiga rights changing hands several times. A loyal user base supported the operating system for several years before former Amiga marketing boss Bill McEwen bought up the Amiga assets in 1999 to found Amiga Inc, releasing Amiga OS3.9 in December 2000.{moscomment}
