One day a big rock will slam into the Earth and wipe out practically
all life, again, so why are we arguing about whether or not to colonise
the Moon and Mars?

The chances of Apophis striking the Earth are "very slim" but, even if it doesn't hit us, eventually another one will. Mass extinctions have happened before and they'll happen again. It's not science fiction, it's a numbers game. Every species has an asteroid out there with its name written on it - just ask the dinosaurs. With so much debris hurtling around the solar system, the law of averages says every now and then we'll cope a direct hit. We don't want to be here when that happens - well, at least not all of us. Just the other day Stephen Hawking was calling for us as a species to get our act together and develop a matter/anti-matter propulsion system so we can get out into the universe before the Earth goes belly up. Is anyone listening? Like usual, the cool kids are off having fun whilst expecting us nerds to do their home work. When the day comes to leave the third rock from the Sun, do we really need to take the beautiful people with us? I say you only get on the space ship if you can name Newton's three laws of motion and at least one Ferengi rule of acquisition. That'll wipe the smile of their pretty little faces.{moscomment} |
