Chinese ISP baidu.com has been reported saying there are just under 20 million bloggers in China, a 24 percent increase in 12 months. But almost six months ago the figure was reported to be double this number.Featured Whitepaper

Another press report quoted exactly the same figure but attributed it to baidu.com. It seems likely that baidu was simply quoting the Qinghua University figure. The date of the Qinghua University survey was not given, but its prediction of 60 million Chinese bloggers by year end is consistent with earlier numbers from Chinese specialist IT market researcher, Analysys International. Analysys said: "By the end of Q3 of 2005 (30 September), the total registered users [of blog service providers] had reached 33.36 millions, more than twice compared with the user number of 14.75 millions by the end of 2004. The involvement of large portals such as Sino Blog and MSN Spaces and some instant messaging service providers like Tencent is the main reason to drive the rapid growth of user numbers." It is also possible for there to be a significant discrepancy between registered users of blog service providers and active bloggers.{moscomment} |
