As the PS3, Wii and Xbox 360 duke it out for high profile gaming supremacy in the living room, it seems that mobile gaming is the hot sales item.  Marketing departments know it, revenue is expected to rise by %33 next year.  But can it be true that casual mobile gaming is the future of interactive entertainment?

In the US during November Gaming consoles sold through the roof with both the PlayStation 3 (197K) and Nintendo Wii (400K) selling out at launch, whilst the Xbox 360 has had a solid month (511K).

As predicted here at iTWire, the PS2 has continued to dominate the console market (664K).  But it is mobile gaming that has been really shifting the units and dollars in gaming.

Nintendo easily leads the pack, shipping 918,000 DS units and 641,000 Game Boys, with the Sony PSP bringing up the rear with a respectable 412,000 units sold.

What does this mean for the gaming industry? Even with the power of the Play Station Portable, games for the hand held market are generally cut down versions of their console or PC derivations, or exclusive titles that are targeted towards a more casual short term gaming experience.

Then there is whole mobile phone gaming platform.  Java based mobile gaming has come a long way since "snake" and now you can really hurt your thumbs on a myriad of down loaded games for your phone.

In Australia, the mobile gaming market is worth A$25-30 Million, with content set to drive an expected A$10 Million revenue growth next year.  Australians are currently downloading more games than music to their mobile devices.

Microsoft is enthusiastically targeting the mobile phone as part of its next generation Live platform.

I have been fooling around with some of the latest offerings from the Digital Chocolate development team.  These include the usual puzzle type titles, along with more sophisticated experiences.  What to know how I went ?  Click to page two.
