ICANN and DotAsia signed the .asia registry agreement on 6 December 2006 at the ICANN annual meeting in Sao Paulo, Brazil following the ICANN board approving the designation of the .asia sponsored top-level domain on 18 October 2006. DotAsia is the first gTLD registry with a headquarters in the Asia-Pacific region. DotAsia Organisation (http://www.dotasia.org) is a membership-based not-for-profit corporation located in Hong Kong that was created in March of 2004 for the purpose of submitting a proposal to ICANN to operate a new TLD registry for the .asia top-level domain (TLD). Global Reach estimates that over 64 percent of the Internet's population are non-English speakers and that Asian languages alone make up 33 percent of the online population. According to DotAsia "While current gTLDs tend to focus on a vertical group (eg commercial entities, network providers, organisations etc.) within the global Internet, .asia will embrace a horizontal perspective with a clear brand to reach and enrich the broad global community. Unlike ccTLDs, which provide for a local audience, .asia will allow the user to express membership in the larger Asian community." ".asia is a wonderful opportunity for the members of the region to express themselves on the Internet. It is a natural fit for our AsiaDNS service," said Frederick Schiwek, VP sales & marketing of EuroDNS.com. "The level of interest from our users have been tremendous in the last few months." EuroDNS is based in Luxembourg with a subsidiary in Korea. The company is a worldwide registrar, specialising in geographical domain names, in Europe and in Asia through its dedicated AsiaDNS service. Its domain registration portal claims to covers 15 different languages and serves more than 97 percent of Europe's population with over 25 top level domains.{moscomment} |
