Crocs, cracks and cricket: Australia's most popular web searches E-mail

Steve Irwin, the Beaconsfield mine tragedy, finding a new job and checking cricket scores are the most popular search topics for Australians, end-of-year data from Yahoo!7 indicates.

Based on the data from the search/media portal, it seems that Aussies want an intriguing mixture of up-to-the-minute news combined with impossibly generic information. The late Steve Irwin topped the overall search table, followed by 'Beaconsfield miners'. Rather basic searches for jobs, cricket and recipes filled out the top five.

Technology made its best showing in the 'Products' category, with online adventure game Runescape topping the rankings and DVD recorders, file sharing software Limewire and digital cameras all featuring.

It also seems safe to assume that many of the other entertainment scandals which appear in the listings -- ranging from the Big Brother 'turkey slapping' incident to Kylie Minogue's comeback concerts -- were driven by a desire to locate illicit YouTube footage.

2. Beaconsfield miners
3. Jobs
4. Cricket
5. Recipes
6. Petrol prices
7. Real estate
8. Workchoices
