Nintendo up beat for Aussie launch of Wii. More popular than iPod? E-mail

Thursday is Wiiday next week in Australia, as the second of the big three gaming consoles launches.  Nintendo’s intriguing follow up to the under appreciated Gamecube is set to revolutionise the game space in this country.

During a radio interview last night on Melbourne’s 3RRR FM, Greg Arthurton, Marketing Manager for Nintendo was – as all of Nintendo seem to be at the moment – up beat about the impending release.

Joking about gamers now shrugging off the “couch potato” image by becoming active with game titles via the innovative Wii-mote, Greg mentioned immersion being top of the list of Nintendo goals for Wii purchases.

This will be across the board from the Mario titles to the more hard-core titles like Call of Duty 3.  Gamers won’t have to, but most likely will feel compelled to jump up and be involved physically with their console (errrk!).  Depending on fitness levels, Nintendo may be required to change the name of their console to the Wheeze.

Great line up of launch titles, simple but effective interface that can be used for the Wii channel feature to download content ranging from nostalgic games to current weather and News.  The only current downers seem to be the lack of initial DVD playback support, and a possible issue with the wrist strap on the controller.

Nintendo plans to ship 4 million Wii’ by the end of this year, which is a lofty goal, considering the Sony aim for a relatively paltry 1 Million PS3’s to ship in a similar period.  Some analysts are predicting the Wii to be more popular than even the Apple omnipresent iPod.

Will Nintendo’s optimism be realised? Only you hold that answer.  So the weather is much kinder to us Southern Hemisphere folk, start lining up.   {moscomment}
