Wii takes the early lead from the PS3 but Xbox 360 still rules supreme E-mail

What to buy, oh what to buy? The PS3 or Wii might be highly sought after games consoles but haven’t even shipped units in the seven figures yet, while the Xbox 360 has shipped well over 7 million units so far.

Early reports online tell us that the Wii is hitting high marks with consumers who have managed to snap one up on launch day and soon after. With four times as many consoles on sale at launch, the Wii may well have sold out, but there are, according to NexGenWars, over 563,000 Wii’s out there to the PS3’s 317,000 consoles sold.

The Wii’s control system is truly proving irresistible, with consumers playing the new motion sensing games with great gusto, so much so that some are already complaining of ‘Wii elbow’, while others have accidentally it their fellow players and at least one poor chap launched his Wii-mote with such force towards the TV that the hand strap snapped off and cracked the glass of his rear-projection TV.

Lucky for him it wasn’t a plasma unit, which may well have started leaking gas. Either way, it’s not good to have a screen with a big crack in it, and it’s a timely warning to people to be careful with their Wii-motes. It’s also perhaps the beginning of a new industry of TV screen protectors, used at the very least when the Wii-ing is about to start.

The other funny thing about the amazing way people have taken to motion sensing playing with such passion is that the dramatic movements we see people making are not necessary. People are making these movements because that’s what you’d do in real life.

But the Wii can be used with much simpler, gentler, smaller movements, so it’s important to remember this, especially if you’ve puffed yourself out after some quite vigorous play, and you’d like to keep on playing!

The PS3, as we’ve said before, and as many others have as well, is a fantastic games console. Sony really have pulled the rabbit out of the hat, delivering a true ‘home entertainment center’ in one box.

Sure, some might want even better games, but since when are the 1st generation of new games for any console the best games that console ever had? And that said, the PS3 games that I’ve played were more than good enough and graphically pretty enough for my cynical eyes – Sony definitely weren’t resting while the PS3 was delayed from coming to market.

But some people weren’t as impressed as they wanted to be, and to them, the answer is always that the 1st generation is always superceded by the 2nd generation of games, and then a 3rd and so on and so forth.

An excellent demonstration of the Xbox 360’s 2nd generation gaming goodness is their hit new game ‘Gears of War’ game. It’s the best looking Xbox 360 game ever, truly taking advantage of the Xbox 360’s graphical power, and already selling well over 1 million copies worldwide.

Of course the PS3 will start coming out with some even more amazing games to try and show up the Xbox 360 as much as they possibly can, but no-one is standing still.

Consumers have a tough choice this Christmas. You’ll be happy no matter which one you buy, and choosing only one is where the difficulty comes in. These devices really are not that expensive, especially with the wonders of credit cards. Buying all the games for each platform will likely be the more challenging part of being a multi-games console owner.

So... 2007 will be the year where the games console finally grows up, just as their users have over the past twenty years. How will you be able to resist the temptation to buy them all?
