The new test match: Telstra v Optus, but the winner is 3 E-mail

Telstra and Optus are vying with each other to provide information on the Ashes series to their mobile, and in Telstra's case, online customers, and Telstra is looking like the clear winner over Optus.

Telstra opened the batting with press release today announcing " an on-demand service for cricket fans, via Telstra 3G mobiles and online, giving them live statistics and scores of the day's play, special ball-by-ball text 'commentary', expert analysis from Mark Waugh and news updates around the clock."

Optus was not far behind with the launch of an Ashes Series news site on the OptusZoo Portal, but its offering seemed much less impressive:: ball-by-ball in progress scores; the ABC video sports wrap ("all the latest on the cricket as well as highlights from the rest of the day's sport" ); news as it breaks throughout the series; player profile and match predictions ("see the likelihood of England taking the Ashes back to Britain or Australia winning"); and match results, standings and scoreboard.

Telstra on the other hand is offering "Mark Waugh's expert observations..[as] part of a live six minute breakfast bulletin hosted by Russell Barwick on BigPond both online and on mobiles around 7am every day play is scheduled throughout summer."

Waugh will be a daily guest on BigPond Cricket News during the First Ashes Test Match and throughout the One Day Series in January-February.
