Following its trials of ADSL2+ Annex M and the registration of a revised ACIF code embracing Annex M last week, ISP Internode has launched a fully commercial Annex M offering, saying an upgrade to Annex M will be available at no charge to all existing customers on its SOHO and business ADSL2+ plans, increasing the maximum upload speed from 1Mbps to 2.5Mbps.Featured Whitepaper

Internode managing director, Simon Hackett, said: "Our four-month trial shows that many customers will receive speeds in the order of 2Mbps on their lines. Internode has researched and modelled Annex M for the past 18 months, so we are ready to go today." Hackett said the main beneficiaries of Annex M would be businesses that used broadband for remote access to central offices. "This dramatically improves remote access for virtual workplaces...Faster upstream speeds are needed to deliver the next wave of broadband benefits to businesses." Last year, Internode engaged Dr Paul Brooks of Consultel (now with Layer 10 Consulting) to assist it with gaining regulatory approval to standardise the use of Annex M in Australia. As part of this process, engineering technicians ran extensive simulations and modelling to ensure Annex M can operate trouble-free alongside existing ADSL2+ Annex A services. Internode lists devices that will support Annex M as being: the Billion 7404VGP-M ADSL2+ router ($299); the Open Networks 624W Wireless ADSL gateway ($179), and says: "We have observed that current firmware in Linksys WAG54G routers also supports Annex M." However, it says that Cisco ADSL2+ routers do not support Annex M mode at this time. "We expect the release of a '-M' version of the Cisco ADSL2+ router product line in the fairly near future." Billion says it has four Annex M products available, through distributor PC Range and its resellers: the BiPAC 7401VGPM modem router with VoIP; BiPAC 7300 ADSL2+ modem router series (7300 & 7300G); BiPAC 7402 modem routers (7402R2M, 7402GLM & 7402GM) and 7404V VoIP firewall router series (7404VGPM & 7404VGOM).{moscomment} |
