Hutchison provides 3G in major centres on the network it shares with Telstra. Outside these areas it has roaming access to Telstra's 2G GSM/GPRS network and in these areas, or if for some reason the modem could not establish communication with a 3G base station within the coverage area, the $1.65 per Mbyte rate would apply. However, a Hutchison spokesman told iTWire that the card had LEDs which indicated its communication mode and also could be configured by the user to operate only on the 3G network. In addition, he said a small buffer had been included on each plan -2Mbyte, 4Mbyte and 6Mbyte respectively - to allow users to complete tasks or perform urgent communications without paying the roaming chares. "We found a lot of customers wanted that: for example to send an important email," he said. The new rates are more attractive than many other mobile data plans. Vodafone, on its new HSDPA network, has three plan $29.95 per month with 100Mbytes of data; $49.95 per month for 300Mbytes and $99.95 per month for1Gbyte. Telstra on Next G offers s 256kps services at $49.95 for 200Mbytes per month and $79.95 for 1Gbyte. The faster service 550kps-1.5Mbps is offered at $79.95 for 400Mbytes, $109.95 for 1Gbyte and $199.95 for 3Gbytes. Additional data is $0.30 per Mbyte. For $199.95 per month on iBurst, from BigAir, you can get 10Gbytes at peak periods and 20Gbytes off peak. $44.95 will get you 200/400Mbytes and $79.95 1G/2G, all at 1M/356kbps The 3 mobile data card costs $399 and comes with an adaptor allowing it to be used in machines with a PCMCIA slot. 3's HSDPA network upgrade will be launched in Brisbane in December, and Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Adelaide and Perth in early 2007. {moscomment} |
