Perhaps US gamers have learnt too many lessons from violent console games as a shooting, theft, violence and police action mark the launch of the PS3 console in the US. Featured Whitepaper
5 Best Practices for Smartphone Support
Robbers armed with a gun tried to get those in line to hand over their cash, and when one consumer refused, he was shot for his troubles. The PS3 is reported to have sold out in minutes, with many happy customers leaving many more unhappy ones behind with the choice of a Xbox 360, a PS2 or the older Xbox console. Given that so many have stayed in lines for so long, the unlucky customers without PS3s to take home may well decide, if they’re not going to take an Xbox 360 home, to keep on staying in line and wait for a Nintendo Wii instead. With Nintendo aiming to release more Wii consoles in the US than in any other territory during the launch phase, more shoppers will have a better chance of buying one, but many will still go home empty handed, needing to wait for extra stocks to arrive between now and Christmas in the hope of buying one. Reports of lucky PS3 buyers opting to sell their consoles on eBay and elsewhere for sums of up to US $2500, the lure of instant, massive profits have proved too much for some to resist. Given that US $2500 could buy you a beautiful 42-inch 1080p full HD LCD or DLP television, along with a PS3, a Wii and some games, anyone willing to splash this much cash either has rocks in their head, has more money than sense, is desperate to look cool, is desperate to calm their teenagers or is seriously addicted to console gaming or all of the above. With millions more PS3 and Wii consoles due in 2007, the smart move is to simply wait. Plenty more games will be available, as will an ever-growing selection of Blu-ray movies, but when something’s hot, everyone wants to be the first on the block to say they have a PS3. One thing is certain, however: no games console is worth getting shot for. Real life is more important and far more valuable than virtual pleasures, although there’s no doubt some will disagree.
