Qualcomm and Motorola are to jointly develop UMTS (WCDMA) cellulr handsets based on Qualcomm's Mobile Station Modem chipsets.
The devices will be based on Qualcomm's Mobile Station Modem chipsets, and the collaboration expands on their existing relationship for the development of CDMA2000 handsets."Our success in CDMA2000 markets with Qualcomm chipsets makes this expansion a logical one for Motorola," said Ron Garriques, president of Motorola's Mobile Devices business. "By expanding our relationship to include UMTS designs, we are opening the door to new avenues for growth and value creation.

The two companies have given no indication as to when the first products from the collaboration will hit the market.{moscomment}
