Telstra launches ADSL2+ services for business E-mail
by Stuart Corner
Friday, 10 November 2006
Simultaneous with its announcement of higher speed ADSL services for residential customers, Telstra has announced a range of services for businesses at speeds up to 20Mbps using ADSL2+ and at up to 8Mbps by removing the artificial cap of 1.5Mbps on its existing ADSL service.

According to group managing director of Telstra Business, Deena Shiff, “Smaller businesses have traditionally either had to settle for consumer broadband offerings or been saddled with higher cost solutions designed for large corporates.”

This might have been the case from Telstra, but there have been plenty of other offerings on the market. One of the first market entrants with its own DSLAMs, Request broadband - now part of PowerTel offered services targeted very specifically at the SME market. It has been very successful in this market. Internode also launched ADSL2+ services with separate plans for residential, small business customers and larger businesses 18 months ago ).

Telstra's range of offerings comprises: Broadband Starter Package for small business, Business Broadband Advantage for growing businesses and Business Broadband BDSL for larger established businesses. Customers can upgrade or downgrade at any time and Telstra is also offering a suite of services such including security, business support services and hosted web conferencing under the name Business Express.

The entry level offering includes a Microsoft Outlook mail service with two mailboxes, built in Internet and virus security, and domain name registration and hosting, priced from $49.95 per month for a 512/128 service with 500 Mbytes on a 24 month plan until March 2007 for customers taking multiple Telstra services. Top of the line is an unlimited "Highspeed" (ie ADSL2+) plan for $341 per month.

Telstra has also launched symmetrical services at 2Mbps and 4Mbps with 40Gbyte and 60 Gbyte download limits and an unlimited option. These range in price from $1150 per month, (24 month contract, bundled metro area 2Mbps, 40Gbyte) to $6525.50 per month for a 4MBps unlimited service in regional areas. Excess data usage on limited plans is 12 cents per Mbyte.

Comparisons with competing offerings are difficult because of varying options and parameters such as mailboxes and web hosting facilities, service level agreements, etc. However $250 per month on Telstra's Highspeed plan on a two year contract will get you 80Mbytes per month. On Internode's Business Extreme ADSL2+ offering it will get you 120Mbytes per month and on its SOHO ADSL2+ plan $140 per month will get you 90Mbytes .

Details of availability of services by geography was not initially available. However full details of the service are expected to be on Telstra's website later today (10 November).{moscomment}
