The Palm Treo 750v smartphone, the first 3G/UMTS Treo smartphone running the Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system has been introduced into New Zealand, on the Vodafone network.

Vodafone New Zealand launched its 3G network in August 2005 and has just launched HSDPA under the name Vodafone 3G broadband. The Treo 750 will be user-upgradeableto HSDPA speeds early next year.

According to Vodafone New Zealand's head of business terminals Dion Knill, "There is increasing demand from Vodafone customers for straightforward functionality, coupled with familiar software such as Microsoft Windows Mobile and the speed of our 3G network...The Palm Treo 750v rolls all those needs into one device."

The Treo 750 was launched globally in September. http://www.itwire.com.au/content/view/5611/127/
Most of the features of the product had been widely anticipated. The big surprise, however, was the inclusion of a suite of software enhancements to Windows Mobile 5.0 developed by Palm. These include:

- the ability to "dial by name" with a few keystrokes on the keyboard, perform a web search directly from the 'Today Screen' and perform one-touch dialing with personalised photo speed dials;

- the ability to manage a call directly from the 'Today Screen' and "stay on top of voicemail with on-screen, VCR-like icons, such as rewind, delete and fast-forward controls for easy navigation";

- the ability to ignore a call and quickly compose a text message, such as "In a meeting" or "Can't talk"; and

- a dedicated messaging application for SMS/MMS that is organised in a "chat thread" so users can reference prior messages and use emoticons for a personal touch.{moscomment}
