International bodies unite to fight spam E-mail

Six leading international anti-spam initiatives have launched, at the first meeting of the United Nations Internet Governance Forum in Athens, a new online information resource (www.StopSpamAlliance.org) to assist in fighting spam.

The website aims to help co-ordinate international action against spam more effectively and improve information sharing. It will contain information on anti-spam laws and enforcement activities, consumer and business education, best practices for fighting spam, and international co-operation. A "common agenda of events", featuring the international events on spam and relating threats organised by the involved organisations is also available.

"We know there's no simple single solution to fight spam, and the OECD's work on the anti-spam toolkit  stressed the importance of a holistic approach to combating spam", said Claudia Sarrocco of the OECD. "International organisations could and should work together more effectively against spammers, and this initiative will help them do that."

The six organisations are APEC, the European Union's Contact Network of Spam Authorities (CNSA), The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the London Action Plan, the OECD and the Seoul-Melbourne Anti-Spam group, co-founded by the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

The ACMA currently chairs and provides secretarial support for the Seoul-Melbourne Anti-Spam group. Its objectives are to encourage closer co-operation among the signatories (a dozen Asian Government IT bodies) in minimising spam originating or passing through each country/region and being sent to end users in each country/region. {moscomment}
