Despite earlier this year announcing a major unified communications alliance with Nortel, Microsoft has chosen rival IP telephony systems manufacturer, Mitel, to provide equipment for unified communications demonstrations to be set up in Microsoft Technology Centres around the world.

Microsoft unveiled in June  an ambitious plan to integrate all forms of communication in the enterprise and roped in some of the leading names in IT&T to help it realise its ambitions. Microsoft claimed that its approach to unified communications would "break down today's silos of email, instant messaging, mobile and VoIP and audio-, video- and web conferencing," and "put people at the centre of communications through a single identity across all modes and integrate communication into people's everyday work processes."

Shortly after this, Microsoft announced a four-year strategic alliance agreement  with Nortel, with provisions for its extension. The agreement made Nortel Microsoft's strategic partner for advanced unified communications solutions and systems integration and the two companies formed the Innovative Communications Alliance (http://www.innovativecommunicationsalliance.com) as a go-to-market vehicle, described as "[a] unique agreement...[involving] a shared vision for the future of business communications and a shared strategy that involves tight integration at the technology, channel, business engagement and customer experience levels."

Despite this, Mitel has now announced that its suite of unified communications solutions - comprised of the Mitel 3300 IP Communications Platform (ICP), Mitel Live Business Gateway, Mitel Navigator and the Mitel 5340 and 5224 IP Phones - will be used at Microsoft Technology Centres to provide demonstrations of rich telephony, presence and integration features based on Microsoft's unified communications (UC) solutions.

"Mitel's suite demonstrates the powerful benefits of Microsoft's unified communications technologies through tightly integrated telephony, presence and collaboration features that enable clearer and faster decision making, increased productivity and efficiency and streamlined costs," said Adam Hecktman, director of the Microsoft Technology Center Chicago, and alliance member program manager for the Americas. "With a continued partnership in UC development and interworking, Mitel will showcase their solutions running on our technology within all of our MTC locations globally, allowing us to demonstrate the power unified communications to current and future customers."

Mitel said the deployment was part of an agreement between the two companies to demonstrate the combined UC solution with advanced telephony integration. iTWire has been unable to find any announcement of similar arrangements with Nortel, or to confirm whether any are planned.{moscomment}
