Compared to the ambitious claims made by Nortel for its WiMAX gear, also announced at WiMAX World USA, Nokia's claims were modest: "The compact size and light weight design of the base station modules minimises the space needed, power consumption, and physical effort to install and run high quality WiMAX networks, and uses existing or new base station sites efficiently. It can be installed both indoors and outdoors and does not require air conditioning. Furthermore, its modularity will allow for easy capacity upgrades as traffic increases." However these announcements, and a host of others from Intel, Motorola etc are a sure sign that WiMAX will be a strong force in the mobile market within a couple of years. Nokia bringing its cellphone design expertise to user devices is another significant development in the emergence of WiMAX. Nokia's announcement made clear the company's commitment to the overall WiMAX market saying its strategy included "end-to-end infrastructure capabilities with radio and core network solutions along with a comprehensive services business solutions portfolio...[including] fluent processes for planning, building, optimising, maintaining networks, integrating end-user services to the network as well as taking on greater responsibilities for service delivery through managed service operations." Nokia is a founding and active member of the WiMAX Forum and the standardisation process for the mobile WiMAX standard IEEE 802.16e-2005. {moscomment} |
