Google bundles Writely, Spreadsheets into package E-mail

Search leader Google has announced the formation of an embryonic online Google Office suite by bundling its online word processor Writely and Google Spreadsheets into an integrated package called Google Docs and Spreadsheets, allowing a single sign-on for both applications.

According to Google, its web-based word-processing and spreadsheet package will make it easier for people to create, manage, and share documents and spreadsheets online through integrating Writely and Google Spreadsheets into a single, easy-to-use product. In practice, having the two products in a single package means that users only need to register once to have access to both.

What is not clear is when Google intends to bring its other online services, such as Google Calendar, GMail, Sketchup, Google Talk, Google Maps, and others into the fold, creating a single sign-on for users who can then choose applications from a menu.

We have put this and other questions to Google and these are the answers we got from a Google spokesperson:

Why integrate Writely and Google Spreadsheets?

Google users have been asking for integration between Writely and Google Spreadsheets to make it easier to create and share documents and spreadsheets on the Web.

Is Google building Office for the Web?

People are still going to use desktop word processing and spreadsheet programs. Google Docs & Spreadsheets is optimized for the Web and makes it easy for people to create and share documents and spreadsheets online.

Many people's lives are increasingly net-centric, meaning they do more and more of their daily tasks using the Web. Google is taking a set of important tasks and offering a net-centric solution to completing those tasks individually and in concert with others. But making net-centric solutions that make sharing online really easy does not make desktop products obsolete. Most people will continue to use desktop spreadsheet and word processor programs that work offline and have lots of features developed over the last 20+ years. Google Documents complements these desktop programs because users can easily import and export desktop files.

Is Google going to integrate Google Docs & Spreadsheets with other Google products?

We continue to listen closely to user feedback and will evaluate request and ideas for integration with other Google products. When we get user feedback that integration between Google products better serves our users, we listen. Google Talk integration in Gmail and now the combination of Writely and Google Spreadsheets are great examples of this.

When will the product come out of beta?

We look forward to hearing from our users how Google Docs & Spreadsheets can be enhanced and improved to better serve our user's needs. We do not have anything to announce at this time about when it will come out of beta.

Not so coincidentally, another online office productivity provider, Zoho, has recently announced its own suite of online office productivity tools with a single sign-on. The Zoho suite includes Zoho Writer, Zoho Sheet, Zoho Show (presentations), Zoho Planner, Zoho Creator (database) and Zoho Chat.

Today Zoho intends to announce an expanded office productivity suite called Zoho Virtual Office, which will include additional applications such as calendaring, webmail, CRM and project management. The online application will be free for individual users and cost US$9 a month for small businesses.{moscomment}
