Page 2 of 2 So, while the computer was on and connected to the Internet, the download trickled through over the course of two days. When the computer was turned off, the download was properly paused and shut down, with an icon on the desktop letting you re-start the download whenever you wanted. Everything was going just fine until the 99% mark. I’d only just mentioned to a friend ‘hey, it’s up to 99%!’ and was eagerly awaiting the usual ‘download complete’ message, when disaster struck. Next to the 99% download were two words that any computer user would dread. Those words were ‘Fatal Error’. I haven’t been to sleep yet since reading them as it only happened earlier today, but I’m sure I’ll be having nightmares about it. My friend helpfully suggested that perhaps, upon rebooting the computer and re-starting the download, things would right themselves and the download would complete successful. However, he also predicted that the download would probably want to start from the beginning. Of course this is also the friend that wondered aloud whether downloading such a big file over wireless was such a good idea when I mentioned I was doing it on day 1. Guess which scenario turned out to be true? Yep, you got it – the Akamai download wanted to torture me again with another 2.49Gb wait!!! Oh, the cybernicity! Woe, destroyed digital bits of download data, ye have entered into the netherworld of cyberspace from whence you shall never return. Akamai and Microsoft, I want my 2.49Gb back, dammit. Moral? Don’t download 2.49Gb over a wireless connection, whether you’re using a so-called download manager or not. Use a wired connection instead and just keep your PC on until it has finished downloading. Or find someone who has already downloaded RC2, get a copy and use your Beta 2 or RC1 installation, although that’s probably illegal, so don’t do it. Or just stick with XP, get a Mac, go the penguin or learn how to use an abacus (although the word is they don’t handle email too well, nor could I find any Ethernet ports on an abacus either). Will I download it again? Yes, I will. But this time it will be on through an ADSL 2+ connection, and will be left on until it’s done! More on Vista RC2 in the not too distant future! {moscomment}
