The main attraction of the 50GB Blu-ray format being touted by Sony will be additional high definition content, including deleted scenes and featurettes related to the making of the movies. In addition, there will be the increasingly obligatory audio commentary by assorted actors, directors, producers and writers. With the release of the first high capacity Blu-ray movies, the format wars battle has widened beyond the high definition players market to content provision. Studios are still fence sitting and having each way bets as to which format to support, with some planning to release movies in both formats. While Blu-ray, claims the greater advantage in disc storage capacity, rival format HD DVD, which can store 30GB has proven itself to be a much cheaper and less problem ridden technology to manufacture. The jury is still out as to which technology produces the better quality high definition video and it is questionable as to whether the Blu-ray camp can entice high definition viewers with the promise of additional content such as high-definition deleted scenes and featurettes. {moscomment} |
