A million reasons to develop a better movie ratings system E-mail
by Stan Beer

Netflix is serious about recommending the right products for customers. In fact the online movie rental company is so serious that it's prepared to offer a software developer a US$1 million prize to come up with an improvement on its current movie ratings system.

At present, Netflix relies on its customer base to rate the films they rent using the standard one to five stars rating system. Based on the ratings it has in its database, Netflix tries to predict what other movies might interest consumers that have chosen to rent a particular title.

However, Netflix doesn't believe its system is accurate enough and would like an enterprising developer to come up with an automated and more accurate ratings system that will make better recommendations to customers.

Netflix wants to achieve a 10% improvement on its current ratings system. In other words, if the current system tells you that Reservoir Dogs is a five star movie based on your past viewing habits, yet after watching it you think it's only a four star movie, the new system should tell you it is a four and a half star movie - or something like that.

Apparently Netflix boss Reed Hastings is a software guru and firmly believes that the key to improving an online movie rentals business is gaining a reputation for having the best ratings system in town and he's obviously prepared to put his money where his mouth is.

Aspiring developers wishing to make their fortune will get access to the Netflix database - minus personal customer details of course. {moscomment}
