Sony uses Lithium Ion batteries containing Cobalt Oxide, which under certain circumstances can lead to overheating in a process called thermal runaway  if short occurs inside the battery due to faulty manufacturing.

Lithium Ion batteries are now widely used in portable devices from digital cameras to notebooks because of their ability to store large amounts of power in small packages. The batteries with Cobalt Oxide have the best storage properties of all Lithium Ion batteries. However, alternative Lithium Ion products with less volatile properties but slightly less storage capacity are available. {moscomment}
