Intel and Siemens to collaborate on unified comms and VoIP E-mail

Intel and Siemens Communications are to collaborate on secure wireless networks and to create VoIP-based unified communications systems.

In the longer term they aim to create "comprehensive vertical industry collaboration solutions to drive business process optimisation for key market segments such as telecommunications service providers, financial services and digital healthcare."

They will also undertake joint market development efforts to demonstrate real time communications solutions for business process optimisation using Intel architecture such as Intel dual-core technology, carrier class rack mounted servers from Intel and the HiPath 8000 and OpenScape unified communications offering from Siemens.

They say their first step will be to demonstrate the Siemens OpenScape unified communications platform running applications such as personal portal, unified communications, video and voice conferencing and mobile clients. They expect to present findings and display the first wave of technology solutions developed at the Intel lab to selected customers by the fourth quarter of 2006.

However, it is difficult to see why Intel, whose technology is at the core of unified communications and VoIP products, would want to align itself with the technology and offerings of one vendor that is in competition with many of its customers and potential customers. Gordon Graylish, Intel's vice president of the sales and marketing group and general manager of Europe, Middle-East and Africa (EMEA), said: "As a result of this collaboration, enterprise customers will be able to avail themselves of unified communications based on the industry's highest performance and most cost effective architecture."

The Intel lab will also act as a centre for the optimisation and integration of products from independent software vendors and other third party systems to work with the new open unified communication VoIP technologies. Additionally, Siemens and Intel plan to jointly optimise and prepare Siemens' software portfolio based on Intel dual-core technology and Intel virtualisation technology "to provide highest performance scalability and flexible capacity for future performance growth regarding user updates and functional additions to be rolled out worldwide." {moscomment}
