According to Internet analysis company, Ipwalk, the US is host to 67 percent of the world's 77 million generic top level domain names, 12 times as many as the second ranked country, Germany. Generic top level domains (gTLDs) are those ending in .com, .net, .org, .info and .biz. Ipwalk suggests a contributing factor to the strong US dominance could be that the country's web hosting industry is both market leading and very competitive on price, with the result that a large number of foreign companies and individuals have chosen the USA for their Internet presence. But the company predicts that China - the fourth ranked country with just 3.22 percent of gTLDs - and other up and coming IT superpowers are likely to catch up as their infrastructure improves. With just five countries accounting for 83.14 percent of all gTLD domain names, there is clearly an opportunity for the lower ranked countries to take market share from the US. Ipwalk's breakdown is USA, 67.23% ; Germany, 5.71% ; Canada, 3.60%; UK, 3.37%; China, 3.22%, leaving just 16.86% divided among all other nations. Ipwalk's Peter Alauacil told iTWire that the company does not rank the location of country code top level domains ccTLDs, such as .com.au, "because the vast majority of ccTLD registries do not allow access to their zone files (which is where we extract data for the TLDs)." However he added: "The gTLD breakdown will still give a good indication of the total status. For example, a large number .au domain names are bound to be hosted in the US, sometimes directly with US hosting companies, and sometimes via Australian web hosts that keep their servers in US data centres." |
