Great expectations: Apple's annual developer conference
Apple will hold its annual worldwide developer conference in San Francisco from August 7-11 and there are rumours of everything from the iPhone to new dual-core Intel-based desktops being unveiled.

Adding fuel to some of these rumours are what appears to be a genuine photo of the venue in preparation showing a large banner across the back of the stage; what purports to be an image of the iPhone and a report from Apple Insider saying that analysing the latest iPod Updater with a hex editor reveals code such as t_feature_app_PHONE_APP, kPhoneSignalStrength, clPhoneCallModel, clPhoneCallHistoryModel, prPhoneSettingsMenu and more.

The only news that Apple has promised is the first preview of the next iteration of OS X: 10.5, code-named Leopard.

More and more mobile phones coming in the market with MP3 players and carriers such as Verizon are getting into the music download business, all of which make an iPhone pretty much an inevitability. The only question is when. Some commentators suggest that WWDC is not the venue for an announcement of such a 'consumer-oriented development." But if is coming you can bet it will be in plenty of time to take advantage of the Christmas spending splurge.

Even more inevitable is the implementation of Apple's move to Intel processors (announced at last year's WWDC) to its range of desktop Macs, expected to be called the Mac Pro. It is expected that these will be based on the new Intel Dual Core 2 processor that Intel has just started shipping.

The image on the banner would suggest that this will not be radically different in appearance from current models. Nor would it suggest any news of an iPhone: the iPod shown looks no different to current models. But we'll just have to wait and see....
