Global Internet roaming service provider iPass has added the 1000 WiFi hotspots operated in Australia by Telstra to the list of over 60,000 around the world from which its customers can gain access to the Internet and to corporate data networks. Through a global network of resellers and agreements with Internet service providers iPass offer customers, from large corporates to individuals, secure single-account access to the Internet via dialup broadband and wireless access services. It agreement with Telstra will significantly improve ease of access in regional Australia via the several hundred WiFi hotspots operated by Telstra in McDonalds restaurants around the country. Telstra also has hotpots in major airports and near blanket coverage of main streets in the CBDs of Sydney and Melbourne with several hundred hotspots mounted on the its picocell cellular network base stations used to improve mobile phone coverage in the CBDs. John Cunningham, iPass' regional manager for Asia Pacific, suggested that iPass' relationship with Telstra would be further extended in coming months. Coverage includes 22 Qantas airport lounges, the international airports of Brisbane, Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne, selected Accord and Rydges hotels and Starbucks coffee houses around the country. A full listing is available at http://www.telstra.com.au/wirelesshotspots/ This latest announcement follows that of a three year agreement between Telstra and iPass in November 2005 http://www.itwire.com.au/content/view/2793/127/ under which Telstra became the first carrier worldwide to take up the iPass FlexConnect service. With FlexConnect the iPass technology is integrated into the carriers' technology to support services offered by the carrier to its corporate customers. Telstra uses it to provide mobile workers in within Australia access to their corporate networks, securely and seamlessly via any one of Telstra's multiple access technologies: dial up, ADSL, cable, 2G and 3G wireless and WiFi. Earlier this year, iPass signed a similar agreement with Telecom New Zealand. Separate from the FlexConnect agreement with Telstra, iPass has several reseller partners in Australia and their end user customers will now be able to gain access through the Telstra WiFi hotspots as a result of this new agreement. A list of iPass' Australian resellers can be found here. |
